Cold water on a hot horse - does it help or harm?

For a long time, careful horse people were taught the opposite of what we now do. The advice was to keep cold water away from a hot horse's big working muscles — the worry being that a cold shock could cause cramping, or trigger "tying up". So riders used a little tepid water on the neck, or scraped the water off almost as fast as it went on.
That caution came from a good place: people wanting to protect the horse. So this page doesn't start by mocking the old advice. It takes the worry seriously and asks one simple question — does cold water help a hot horse, or harm him? Everything below draws only on published evidence.
As it turns out, the evidence points clearly one way. And this time, it's good news for the horse.

Does cold water actually cool a hot horse?
Does it work - and better than the gentler alternatives?
Yes, clearly. When researchers compared five ways of cooling hot Thoroughbreds after hard exercise, continuously applied cold running water lowered core temperature the fastest (Takahashi 2020). The physics is on the horse's side: cold water carries heat away from the body far quicker than sweating or standing in the shade can (Marlin et al., 1998). For a horse whose temperature is climbing, speed is everything.
Does cold water cause cramping or "tying up"?
This is the heart of the myth, so it deserves a straight answer. The belief that cold water on big, hot muscles causes cramping or tying-up has been disproven. Rapid cold water may, at most, cause mild and brief cramping — but it is safe, and it relieves heat stress quickly (Takahashi 2020; Marlin 1998). The caution was well-meant, but it doesn't survive contact with the evidence.
Do you have to scrape the water off?
Another piece of received wisdom says scrape at once, or the water "traps" heat against him.
Tested directly, it makes no difference: the horse cools just as well whether he is hosed continuously or hosed and then scraped (Kang 2022). Scraping is optional — and pausing to do it only slows the cooling down. The rule that matters is simpler: keep the cold water going until he has cooled.

Heat illness is not mild discomfort. As a horse's core temperature climbs past roughly 40–42°C, he moves from laboured breathing and distress toward loss of coordination, collapse and — untreated — death, with the risk of tissue damage rising steeply in that range (Brownlow 2023). It is a frightening, dangerous state, and in hot, humid conditions it can come on fast.
So what does cooling do for him?
In plain terms, rapid cold-water cooling is relief. It brings his temperature down before harm takes hold, which is why ice-cold water is the treatment of choice for a seriously overheated horse (Brownlow 2023). Seen from the horse's side, the old caution was never neutral: every minute a hot horse was given only a trickle of tepid water, or scraped instead of hosed, was a minute his distress was prolonged. The evidence didn't just refine a technique — it shortened real suffering.
Around that finding sits a settled scientific picture:
Horses are sentient and experience pain — they are aware of positive and negative feelings, pain among them (Cambridge Declaration 2012 ; NY Declaration on Animal Consciousness 2024).
Assessing pain in animals has been part of science for over 80 years (Broom 2001).
A horse showing no obvious reaction is not evidence of no pain (Shutt, 1987; Broom 2001).
The equine pain face is a validated tool for recognising pain in horses (Gleerup 2015).

What does this practice say about the sport?
This is a story of the horse world getting something right — and being seen to. Faced with clear evidence, racing and equestrian sport changed a long-held habit. Scientifically supported cooling is now standard and well practised, and the sport's international governing body, the FEI, calls for cooling facilities — shade, misting fans, ice — alongside close monitoring of conditions (FEI, 2021). The turning point traces back to the Atlanta 1996 Olympics, whose heat research reshaped how the sport manages hot weather (FEI, 2021).
Does it actually protect horses at scale?
Tokyo 2020 is the clearest test. In subtropical heat, organisers ran cooling stations stocked with water chilled to around 15°C, misting fans, air-conditioned stables and constant heat monitoring, with the sport's leading cooling scientist advising on site (Foreman 2024). The result: across 248 horses competing in punishing conditions, the veterinary team recorded no heat-related illnesses (Foreman 2024). Done properly, the practice works.
Leading beyond the stable
There is a further point worth making. The equine evidence for cold-water cooling is now cited to guide cooling protocols for dogs and even people (Hall 2023). Here, the horse world's science and practice is leading for other species — not following.
And what the public sees
When people watch horses being actively cared for in the heat — hosed, iced, shaded — it reads as welfare taken seriously. That is the opposite of the social-licence problem some other practices create. It is worth the sport noticing which of its habits earn the public's trust, and why.

Where that leaves us
Unlike some practices this library examines, cold-water cooling passes the test it is put to.
It does the job it claims — it cools a hot horse faster than anything else. The old fear that cold-water cooling leads to 'tying-up' does not survive the evidence. And the horse is the clear winner: less time in a dangerous state, less suffering, fewer deaths.
There is another lesson here, too. A belief held for decades — sincerely, and out of care — gave way once the evidence was clear, and the sport changed its practice. That matters well beyond cooling. It is proof that racing and equestrian sport can let go of a long-held habit when the horse's interests and the evidence point the same way.
